Our LGBTQ community still needs vigilant protection of their civil rights. California has led the way in this effort, and this history must continue. They still suffer housing and employment discrimination, bullying and harassment. LGBTQ youth are 3 – 4 times more likely than their straight peers to attempt suicide. 40% of homeless youth are LGBTQ, often pushed out of their homes due to a lack of family acceptance.
LGBTQ families face unique challenges when it comes to paid family leave. They are 4 times more likely to parent an adopted child and 6 times more likely to be raising foster children. Improving our state laws around paid family medical leave will help support LGBTQ parents.
California needs to ban so-called “conversion therapy”.
Transgender individuals should be allowed to change their gender marker on official identification documents like birth and death certificates, driver’s and marriage licenses. California birth certificates should be changed to include options for “father”, “mother”, or “parent”.
LGBTQ cultural competency should be included in all continuing medical education requirements.
